Continuous and heavy rainfall in the Western Ghats and parts of Maharashtra has triggered alarming water level surges in the Krishna River and its tributaries. As a result, large portions of Karnataka’s Belagavi district are reeling under flood-like conditions.
The situation remains dynamic and concerning as the region battles cut-off villages, flooded farmland, and rising river inflow. Authorities are working round the clock to ensure safety and deliver relief to affected areas.
Over 18 Bridges Submerged Across Multiple Taluks
Due to the persistent downpour, more than 18 bridges in the district are now underwater. These bridges once served as vital lifelines, connecting towns and villages across Chikkodi, Nippani, Athani, Kagwad, and Raibag taluks. Now, their submersion has disrupted transportation and emergency logistics.
In many areas, roads have also disappeared beneath sheets of floodwater. As a result, villagers are struggling to access basic supplies and healthcare facilities. Officials have urged residents to avoid attempting to cross submerged roads, even with barricades in place.
Farmlands Flooded, Crop Losses Mounting
The heavy rains have not only affected infrastructure but also caused extensive agricultural damage. Thousands of acres of fertile land are now flooded, submerging standing crops at a critical stage.
Farmers in the region, who depend on monsoon-season harvests, now face uncertainty and financial strain. Moreover, agricultural input shops and equipment centers are temporarily closed due to access issues. The administration is planning damage assessments to support compensation claims for affected farmers.
Rajapur Barrage Inflow Nearing Flood Mark
At present, the Rajapur Barrage is receiving an inflow of 84,083 cusecs. Although this remains below the official flood threshold of 1.5 lakh cusecs, authorities warn that the inflow could rise sharply if the rains persist in upstream regions.
Therefore, district engineers and disaster response teams are monitoring the inflow levels every hour. Any significant increase could lead to further inundation, especially in low-lying and river-adjacent villages.
Relief Measures Intensify Across 202 Vulnerable Villages
In anticipation of worsening conditions, the Belagavi district administration has marked 202 villages as flood-prone. In response, officials have established relief shelters stocked with essentials like food, clean water, and bedding.
Moreover, animal fodder is being delivered to prevent starvation among livestock. Veterinary teams have also been deployed in flood-affected taluks to monitor and treat animals exposed to prolonged wet conditions.
Additionally, mobile health units have been activated to assist residents who are unable to travel to hospitals or clinics due to road blockages.
Tragic Losses and Isolation of Communities
So far, three people have tragically lost their lives due to rain-related incidents. The floods have also resulted in the death of four livestock, adding to the economic losses faced by rural families.
In Khanapur taluk, religious sites and farmlands are underwater. More critically, 15 villages are completely cut off, lacking road connectivity and emergency access. Rescue teams are using boats to reach isolated households and deliver urgent supplies.
Public Safety, Police Presence, and Monitoring Challenges
While barricades have been placed in flood-prone zones, some areas still lack sufficient police presence. This poses serious safety concerns, especially during night hours. In response, authorities are deploying more officers and increasing patrols in vulnerable regions.
Meanwhile, district officials are working with disaster response units, revenue officers, and local panchayats to maintain constant communication and surveillance.

- Do not attempt to cross submerged bridges or roads.

As weather forecasts indicate continued rain in the coming days, the district remains on high alert. While relief operations are ongoing, the full extent of damage—both economic and infrastructural—will become clear only after the waters recede.
