Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) is grappling with a significant revenue shortfall, as nearly 40% of property owners failed to pay property tax during the 2025–26 financial year.

According to official data, the city has 1,66,178 registered properties, but tax dues were cleared for only 95,829 properties. Defaulters include residential, commercial, educational institutions, and even some government establishments.
Despite claims of improved financial discipline, BCC managed to collect only ₹70.8 crore in property tax—an increase of just ₹1.3 crore compared to the previous year. This falls short of the ₹78 crore target, along with an additional ₹11 crore expected from arrears.

Officials admit that the low recovery rate has impacted financial planning and slowed down development works across the city. The situation has also raised concerns over the efficiency of the revenue department.
For the 2026–27 financial year, BCC has increased its property tax collection target to ₹85 crore. With over ₹7 crore expected from arrears, the total recovery target is likely to exceed ₹92 crore.
Authorities are now under pressure to tighten enforcement measures, improve compliance, and bridge the growing revenue gap.
