Belagavi DC Pushes Tobacco-Free Institutions

Belagavi, March 19: Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Roshan chaired a district-level coordination committee meeting of the Tobacco Control Cell at the District Health Office on Wednesday, emphasizing stricter enforcement and awareness measures.

During the meeting, the DC directed officials to declare 50 educational institutions in Belagavi city and 100 institutions across other taluks as tobacco-free. He also instructed authorities to take strict legal action against shopkeepers violating provisions of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA).

District officials informed that a total of 1,588 educational institutions in Belagavi and Chikkodi divisions have already been declared tobacco-free as per government guidelines. They further reported that 64 enforcement drives have been conducted across the city under Sections 4, 6(a), 6(b), and 6(c) of the COTPA Act.

The meeting was attended by District Health and Family Welfare Officer Dr. I.P. Gadad, District AYUSH Officer Shrikant Sunadholi, and other health department officials.
