Mayoral Election Highlights
The mayoral post has been reserved for the general category, while the deputy mayor’s post is reserved for a general category woman. Several BJP corporators, including incumbent Deputy Mayor Anand Chavan, Girish Dhongadi, Nitin Jadhav, Raju Bhatkande, Abhijit Javalkar, and Udaykumar Upadi, have expressed interest in the mayoral seat.
As for the deputy mayor position, no candidates have openly declared their intent yet. However, a final decision will be made by Belagavi (South) MLA Abhay Patil and BJP Vice-President Anil Benake. Sources suggest the mayoral candidate may hail from the Belagavi (South) constituency, while the deputy mayor could be from Belagavi (North).
BCC Voting and BJP’s Majority
Following the recent disqualification of two BJP corporators, the total number of BCC corporators has reduced to 56. However, with 33 BJP corporators and support from two independents, the BJP holds a clear majority in the 63-member voting body, which also includes key leaders like:
- Satish Jarkiholi, Minister
- Laxmi Hebbalkar, Minister
- Abhay Patil, MLA
- Asif Sait, MLA
- Jagadish Shettar, Belagavi MP
- Priyanka Jarkiholi, Chikodi MP
Election Notification Pending
Regional Commissioner SB Shettennavar, who serves as the election officer, stated that the notification for mayoral elections would be issued soon. “I have received information from BCC authorities to conduct the elections. However, the voters’ list is still pending, and the council body is yet to discuss the disqualification of two members. Once these procedures are complete, the election notification will be released,” Shettennavar confirmed.
This mayoral election will be closely watched as BJP continues to dominate the Belagavi City Corporation.
