The project, launched in 2017 by the Central Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board, aimed to provide PNG connections to 50,000 households in the city. However, as of now, only 37,603 connections have been installed, covering around 74% of the intended beneficiaries.

Mega City Gas Distribution Private Ltd, the agency responsible for implementing the project, began work in 2018. Despite initial progress, the expansion has slowed considerably over the years. According to the company, around 1,800 connections are still pending and awaiting completion.

Officials have attributed the delays to multiple challenges, including difficulties in road excavation and pipeline installation in densely populated areas. These logistical hurdles have significantly impacted the pace of the project.

Meanwhile, there is ongoing debate among residents over the affordability of piped natural gas compared to traditional LPG cylinders, with some questioning whether PNG offers a cost-effective alternative.

With a significant portion of the target yet to be achieved, the project remains incomplete, raising concerns about its timely execution and long-term viability.
