Registrations on the Rise
According to Regional Transport Office (RTO) officials:
- 2023: Around 5,300 EVs registered, including over 5,000 two-wheelers, 130 cars and 100 autorickshaws.
- 2024: Approximately 6,200 EVs registered.
- 2025: Nearly 7,000 EVs registered.
Two-wheelers account for the majority of registrations, with 6,000–7,000 electric bikes being purchased annually in the last three years.
Reasons Behind the Shift
Residents are increasingly opting for electric vehicles due to:
- Rising fuel prices
- Low maintenance costs
- Growing environmental awareness
- Improved battery technology and vehicle design
- Benefits under the Gruha Jyoti free electricity scheme
Earlier, many consumers were hesitant due to concerns about battery life and new technology. However, improved designs, better performance and increasing public trust have boosted confidence in EVs.

Growing Market and Infrastructure
The number of EV showrooms in the district is steadily increasing, with various companies introducing new models. College students, small business owners, hotel operators and delivery drivers are among the key adopters of battery-powered vehicles.
Commuters also cite irregular bus availability under the Shakti scheme as one of the factors influencing personal EV purchases.
Boost to Public Transport
In a positive development, NWKRTC has proposed the purchase of 200 electric buses. Additionally, in the Rajya Sabha on February 9, 2026, Minister of State Tokhan Sahu informed that 750 e-buses were sanctioned to 10 cities in Karnataka under the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme, with 100 buses allocated to Belagavi.
With rising registrations and government support, electric mobility in Belagavi is expected to grow further in the coming years.
