First announced by the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) in 2014, the plan aimed to create a large industrial corridor along the Chennai–Bengaluru–Mumbai National Highway. However, more than a decade later, no significant land acquisition has taken place.

The delay has become a major hurdle for attracting large-scale industries. At the Global Investors Summit, companies had pledged investments exceeding ₹28,000 crore in the district, with the potential to generate over 12,500 direct jobs. Yet, the lack of readily available land has prevented these proposals from taking off.

Currently, industrial land in the district is limited to smaller estates managed by KIADB and the Karnataka State Small Industries Development Corporation (KSSIDC), which cater mainly to small and medium enterprises in areas such as Udyambag, Kanbargi, and Ambewadi.

Officials acknowledge the challenge. According to the Department of Industries, large industries require expansive land parcels, which are currently unavailable in Belagavi. Industry leaders, however, point to administrative delays and lack of political will as key reasons behind the stagnation.

Efforts to establish IT and semiconductor parks in the region have also been delayed, partly due to pending transfer of defence land. The state government has indicated plans to set up a Global Technology Centre in Belagavi, but progress remains limited.

Stakeholders believe that resolving land acquisition and infrastructure bottlenecks is crucial to unlocking Belagavi’s industrial potential and ensuring sustained economic growth.
