Bhimgad Wildlife Safari

The Karnataka government has announced plans to introduce a wildlife safari in Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary, Khanapur, opening an 18 km area for tourism. While the move aims to boost tourism in Belagavi district, environmentalists have raised serious concerns, warning that it could endanger biodiversity and disrupt the fragile ecosystem.

Why Are Experts Opposing the Safari?

Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary, spread across 19,042.5 hectares, is home to tigers, leopards, and rare wildlife species. The area has been protected with restricted access to minimize human interference. However, experts fear that commercial tourism could lead to:

  • Deforestation due to infrastructure development
  • Increased human activity, disturbing wildlife habitats
  • Loss of biodiversity, threatening endangered species

Environmentalists Demand Rollback

Former Army officer and environmentalist Colonel Ravindra Saini, along with other activists, has strongly opposed the decision. “If the government does not withdraw this plan, we will launch a massive protest,” he warned.

The activists demand that the government focus on improving local infrastructure for the 3,000+ residents living in 13 villages inside the sanctuary instead of promoting large-scale tourism.

Call for Action

Environmentalists urge the government to reconsider the decision to protect the sanctuary’s natural balance. They also call on citizens to raise awareness and stand against any move that could harm Bhimgad’s rich biodiversity.
