Malaprabha River Washes Away Bridge Near Kusamali

Belagavi, June 16, 2025:

Warning Signs Escalated Quickly

The situation had been worsening for weeks. On June 8, a landslide near the bridge weakened the approach road. Earlier, on May 25, torrential rains caused the Malaprabha River to rise sharply. As the river overflowed, water rushed dangerously close to the temporary structure. Authorities, recognizing the threat, immediately restricted traffic across the bridge.

Despite these early warnings, the river’s force grew stronger. On Sunday morning, the bridge collapsed, completely breaking the connection between Belagavi and the Chorla route. Fortunately, pre-emptive traffic control prevented any accidents or casualties.

Authorities Respond Swiftly

Soon after the collapse, police blocked the affected road, deployed staff to manage safety, and placed barricades around the damaged area. Officials urged residents and drivers to stay cautious as the river continued to flow above the danger mark.

To maintain movement, the administration issued detour instructions. Commuters must now take the Bailur Cross–Bailur–Habbanhatti–Jamboti route. Travelers heading to Goa from Belagavi should use the Khanapur–Ramnagar–Anmod route until the damaged stretch is repaired or replaced.

Impact on Local Life and Commerce

Many locals expressed frustration. They rely heavily on this road for daily travel, business, and access to medical services. The repeated breakdown of infrastructure has caused delays, losses, and growing public concern. Several business owners said that tourism traffic toward Goa has significantly reduced, affecting earnings.

Community leaders urged the government to replace temporary solutions with permanent structures. They emphasized the need for durable infrastructure in regions regularly hit by heavy rainfall and flooding.

Looking Ahead: Plans and Caution

The Taluk administration has confirmed that the Public Works Department will begin surveys for a permanent bridge once weather conditions stabilize. In the meantime, emergency response teams are closely monitoring the river. Authorities have increased patrolling in low-lying areas and advised villagers living along the river to remain alert.

Moreover, officials are sending regular weather and safety updates via local radio and digital alerts. Residents have been asked to avoid riverbanks and travel only when necessary, especially during peak rainfall.

Conclusion

While the monsoon brings much-needed rain to Karnataka, it also exposes the vulnerability of critical infrastructure. The repeated collapse of bridges and roads demands stronger planning and long-term investment. Until then, officials continue to focus on public safety, quick response, and traffic control.
