Belagavi MP Jagadish Shettar met Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Shri Piyush Goyal in New Delhi to discuss initiatives to boost agricultural productivity in the Belagavi Lok Sabha constituency. The proposed facility aims to address the critical issue of post-harvest losses faced by farmers. In India, inadequate cold storage infrastructure results in the wastage of 18% of agricultural produce each year, causing an estimated financial loss of ₹13,300 crore. This loss not only affects the national economy but also severely impacts the livelihoods of farmers. By creating a modern storage and packaging facility, Belagavi farmers will be able to preserve the freshness and quality of their produce, ensuring better market prices and reduced wastage.
Belagavi is one of Karnataka’s largest producers and exporters of fruits and vegetables. The district’s fertile lands contribute significantly to the state’s agricultural exports, ranking second in terms of export value. However, the lack of proper storage facilities hampers the region’s growth potential. The proposed cold storage facility will also boost exports, positioning Belagavi as a key hub for high-quality produce in international markets.
MP Jagadish Shettar highlighted the success of similar facilities, such as the one near Mapusa in Goa, during his discussion. He emphasized the urgent need for a similar project in Belagavi to support farmers and improve agricultural efficiency. Shri Piyush Goyal appreciated the proposal and assured MP Shettar that the central government would give it serious consideration. The minister also stated that necessary steps would be taken to address the needs of farmers in the region.
This development brings hope to the farming community in Belagavi. The proposed facility is expected to reduce wastage, improve farmer incomes, and boost the district’s agricultural exports. It represents a crucial step toward modernizing agriculture and supporting the rural economy.
