Dudhganga River Overflows; Bridges Inaccessible
Due to nonstop rainfall in the Krishna River’s catchment area, the Dudhganga River overflowed onto the Bhoj-Shivpurwadi bridge on Tuesday. As a result, traffic on this key route came to a standstill.
Earlier on Monday, three more bridges — Karadaga-Bhoj, Barwad-Kunnur, and Akkol-Sidnal — were submerged in Chikodi taluk, disconnecting several villages. These routes are crucial for daily commuters and local transport.
Rivers Swell Across the Region
The rainfall over the past four days has sharply increased the water levels of many rivers. Not only the Krishna, but also its major tributaries — Malaprabha, Ghataprabha, Vedganga, and Dudhganga — are now flowing with heavy force. Consequently, authorities have started monitoring water levels closely to avoid flood-related emergencies.
Gokak Falls Becomes a Tourist Magnet
Despite the dangers posed by the rain, many tourists are flocking to Gokak Falls, often called the “Niagara of India”. Thanks to the rainfall, the waterfall is at its full glory. Visitors are eager to experience the breathtaking sight, although authorities urge caution while visiting the area.
Rain Damage in Belagavi and Response
The rainfall hasn’t just affected the rivers. In Belagavi city and nearby taluks, heavy winds and rain have caused trees and electricity poles to fall. In response, HESCOM and the Forest Department have launched restoration efforts. Their teams are working around the clock to restore power and clear fallen trees.
Rainfall Data Shows Sharp Increase
Between June 1 and June 15, Belagavi district recorded 132 mm of rain, more than double the usual 64 mm for this period.
- Khanapur taluk, known for receiving the highest rainfall in the district, saw 155 mm of rain (normal: 111 mm).
- Other taluks with above-normal rainfall include Ramdurg, Kagwad, Yaragatti, Savadatti, Gokak, Mudalagi, Chikodi, Bailhongal, Athani, Kittur, Raibag, and Hukkeri.
Clearly, the entire district is witnessing heavier-than-usual rain for this time of year.
Stay Safe: Advisory from Authorities
Authorities have advised the public to avoid travelling through flooded roads or bridges. Moreover, residents near rivers should stay alert and move to safer areas if water levels continue to rise.
Meanwhile, district officials and disaster management teams are prepared for further action, should the rains continue in the coming days.
