Hidkal dam water diversion

Belagavi: Farmers under the Namma Neeru, Namma Hakku organization have decided to suspend their planned protest against the diversion of Hidkal dam water to the Dharwad industrial area. The decision comes after the Hukkeri Tahsildar issued a letter stating that work on the canal and pipeline has been stopped due to strong opposition from farmers.

Farmers Strongly Oppose Water Diversion

Former Minister Shashikant Naik announced this development on Monday. He emphasized that although the protest is on hold, farmers remain firmly against releasing water for industrial use. He reminded authorities that the Hidkal dam serves agricultural needs, and diverting its water would severely impact farmers.

Farmer leader Sidagouda Modagi raised concerns about the potential water crisis if the government proceeds with the diversion plan. “We already face irregular rainfall and declining groundwater levels. If the government diverts irrigation water, our crops will suffer, and many farmers will lose their livelihoods,” he warned.

Farmers Demand a Permanent Cancellation

Despite the temporary halt, farmers insist on a complete withdrawal of the project. “We want the government to scrap the plan entirely,” Modagi declared. He also warned that farmers would resume protests if authorities attempt to restart the project.

Local farmers argue that the Hidkal dam supplies water to multiple taluks, and any reduction in irrigation water would directly affect food production and rural employment. Activist Sujit Mulgund and others at the press briefing urged the government to prioritize agriculture over industrial expansion.

Farmers to Closely Monitor Government Actions

Farmers plan to keep a close watch on government decisions regarding the Hidkal dam water diversion. They remain prepared to launch fresh protests if the government revives the project without their consent. Meanwhile, they are demanding official assurances that authorities will not resume work.

The debate over water distribution for industrial versus agricultural use continues in Karnataka. Farmers argue that irrigation must take priority, as their survival depends on a steady water supply.
