Health and Family Welfare Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao addressed the Legislative Council, highlighting the sharp rise in Caesarean deliveries across Karnataka. Of the total deliveries, 46% are C-sections, and private hospitals report 80-90% rates in some cases, allegedly driven by monetary motives and convenience.
To address this concern, the state government will launch a dedicated programme in January to curb unnecessary Caesarean deliveries and promote normal deliveries. The health department conducts audits across hospitals to analyze why doctors decide on C-sections.
Additionally, the government plans to provide 24/7 maternity services at taluk hospitals to encourage and facilitate normal deliveries. By improving infrastructure and access to trained healthcare professionals, the state aims to reduce the dependency on private hospitals for maternity care. Special training sessions for doctors and nurses will also be conducted to strengthen their expertise in handling normal deliveries.
Action Against Foeticide The minister also informed the House that authorities arrested 45 individuals under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act for violations related to foeticide. They registered cases in Belagavi, Kolar, Mandya, and Bengaluru Rural districts for 2023-24 and 2024-25.
