₹28 Crore Spent on Belagavi Winter Session: RTI Activist

After holding winter sessions of the state legislature in Belagavi for nearly two decades, the Karnataka government is considering a proposal to host the monsoon session in the border city between June and July.

According to officials, the move is being examined as winter sessions have not effectively addressed local and agrarian issues in the region. Legislators feel that a monsoon session would be more relevant, as key farming-related concerns emerge during this period and would allow the administration to respond promptly.

Assembly Speaker UT Khader said the proposal is also aimed at protecting the local economy. He pointed out that winter sessions disrupt tourism and wedding-related activities in November and December, as hotels are occupied by legislators, officials, and media personnel.

Sources said the proposal has support within the government, though the financial burden remains a concern. A two-week winter session in Belagavi costs the state around ₹30 crore, and a longer monsoon session could significantly increase expenditure.

Khader clarified that no final decision has been taken and that all aspects, including costs and logistics, are being carefully reviewed. If approved, the change is unlikely to be implemented before 2027.
