In this village of around 1,200 people, nearly 80% of the 300 households use gobar gas units, locally known as ‘Deena Bandhu’ plants. Installed over three decades ago, these units continue to function efficiently, providing fuel for cooking and lighting, while also producing organic fertiliser and promoting cleanliness.

Most families in Kattanbhavi are farmers or livestock rearers, making it easy to sustain the plants using cattle and household waste. The system operates through underground pipelines, ensuring hygienic handling of waste. Over the years, the technology has evolved, with newer, compact units requiring minimal space and investment.

The initiative was introduced in the 1990s by NGOs such as Jana Jagarana Samsthe and Khadi Gram Abhivruddhi Sangha. Social worker and Devraj Urs awardee Shivaji Kaganikar played a key role in spreading awareness and encouraging adoption across the region.

Residents say the system is easy to maintain and cost-effective. With most households depending on gobar gas, the village has significantly reduced its reliance on LPG cylinders.

Kattanbhavi now stands as a model for sustainable rural living, showcasing how traditional and eco-friendly practices can effectively address modern energy challenges.
