Reasons for Falling Prices of Onions and Sweet Potatoes
Belagavi district grows onions on 4,100 hectares and sweet potatoes on 1,650 hectares. However, additional supply from Maharashtra’s Chandgad region and other neighboring areas has created a supply glut. Untimely rains, inadequate storage facilities, and the influence of middlemen have further impacted the prices.

- Last year, 3.6 lakh quintals of sweet potatoes were supplied to APMC over 12 months.
- This year, over 2 lakh quintals have arrived between April and late December.

K.H. Guruprasad, Secretary of Belagavi APMC, explained that price fluctuations are natural and depend on market supply. He assured that prices are likely to stabilize over time.
