Ramzan Shopping Rush Grips Belagavi Markets

Belagavi: Markets across Belagavi are witnessing a surge in shoppers as the city prepares for Eid-ul-Fitr 2026, expected to be celebrated on March 20 or 21, depending on the sighting of the moon. The festive spirit is visible in major market areas such as Darbar Galli and Khanjar Galli, where colourful light decorations have added to the celebrations.

Despite the hot weather, large crowds have been thronging markets from morning until late night to buy clothes, perfumes, decorative items, caps, ready-made garments and saris. Many youngsters are also opting for kurta-pyjama and jubba outfits for the festival. As in previous years, shoppers from neighbouring Maharashtra and Goa are also visiting Belagavi for Eid shopping.

Food markets become particularly busy in the evenings, with strong demand for desserts, dry fruits, soft drinks and non-vegetarian dishes. Traders said the price of vermicelli used to prepare sheer kurma ranges between ₹100 and ₹150 per kg.

However, traders noted that imports of dates and dry fruits from Arab countries have decreased this year due to the ongoing global conflict, resulting in higher prices and limited supply in the market.

Meanwhile, iftar gatherings are being organised at various mosques and dargahs in the city, where people come together to break their fast. Some residents are also inviting those observing the fast to their homes for meals.

City Police Commissioner Bhushan Borase and SP Ramarajan said the police department has made necessary arrangements to ensure Ramzan celebrations are held peacefully and harmoniously across the district. They also warned that strict legal action will be taken against anyone violating the rules.
