Belagavi, March 5: The Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) has received a grant of ₹135 crore under the Smart City project to implement the VIISWAS (Vision to Implement Integrated Solid Waste Management and Sustainability) initiative. The announcement was made by Union Urban Development Minister Manohar Lal during a conference in Jaipur.

Belagavi Stands Out in Smart City Challenge

The CITIIS 2.0 challenge invited 84 cities to propose smart city projects. Among them, Belagavi became the only city from Karnataka to secure a place in the top 18 finalists. BCC and Belagavi Smart City Ltd. jointly developed the proposal. In March 2024, Sayeeda Afrin Banu Ballari, Managing Director of Belagavi Smart City, presented the project to the jury.

Key Agreement for Project Implementation

Four key entities signed an agreement to implement the project:

  • Union Ministry of Urban Development
  • KUIDFC, Bengaluru (State Representative)
  • Smart City Belagavi
  • Belagavi City Corporation

This agreement lays the foundation for a three-year solid waste management project, set for completion by March 2028.

Project Focus & Implementation

The initiative will improve waste collection, segregation, recycling, and sustainable disposal. The project aims to create a cleaner and more eco-friendly Belagavi through modern waste management techniques.

Several key officials participated in the agreement signing, including:

  • Sharath, MD, Karnataka Infrastructure & Finance Corporation
  • Sayeeda Afrin Banu Ballari, MD, Belagavi Smart City
  • Shubha B, Commissioner, Belagavi City Corporation

With this funding, Belagavi is on track to become a model city for sustainable waste management in Karnataka.
