Tourist Frenzy at Chikale Waterfalls Sparks Safety Concerns

Tourists Risk Safety for Reels and Selfies
Visitors often cross weak fences and stand dangerously close to the waterfall’s edge. In fact, many do this to shoot reels, selfies, and dance videos. Moreover, some even climb down to the base of the falls, which becomes slippery and risky during the rainy season. Consequently, locals and environmentalists have called this behavior reckless. They warn that accidents and falls could happen at any time.
Safety Measures Fall Short
Despite past incidents, authorities have not posted permanent guards at the site. Although the Forest Department installed fences, they are only 3 to 6.5 feet tall. Therefore, locals say tourists can easily climb over them. As a result, the fencing fails to keep visitors away from dangerous zones. Thus, residents criticize the weak infrastructure and demand stronger safety measures.
Entry Fee Implemented to Improve Management
To better manage visitors, the Forest Department and Village Forest Committee issued an order to collect entry fees. Specifically, the Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF) passed this directive on May 26. The goal is to develop Chikale into a safe and sustainable tourist destination. Furthermore, it aims to protect the environment. However, activists say enforcement is weak. In particular, they highlight the lack of trained staff, poor fencing, and ongoing waste problems.
Similar Issues at Parwad Waterfalls
Parwad Waterfalls, nearby, faces the same challenges. Tourists enter restricted areas without supervision. Consequently, locals urge the Forest Department to act quickly. They demand 24/7 security, stricter rules, and better infrastructure. Above all, they want to prevent accidents before tragedy strikes.
The Way Forward
Authorities must enforce entry rules strictly. Additionally, they should invest in stronger safety barriers and clear signage. Regular monitoring during peak monsoon months is essential. Besides this, public awareness campaigns can encourage responsible tourism. Ultimately, protecting tourists and the environment requires teamwork between officials, locals, and visitors.
