Belagavi, Nov 8: Farmers in Belagavi district have withdrawn their nine-day-long protest after accepting the revised sugarcane price announced by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The agitation, led by Sri Shashikan Guruji of Inchigeri Shakha Math, was being held at Gurlapur near Mudalagi.

Announcing the end of the protest, Sri Shashikan Guruji said that farmers have agreed to the Chief Minister’s formula, under which they will receive ₹3,300 per tonne of sugarcane — ₹3,250 from sugar factories and ₹50 from the State government. The farmers’ leaders said they would vacate the protest site and cooperate with factories to start crushing operations.

Guruji described the decision as a victory for farmers and highlighted that the agitation helped unite around 20–30 farmers’ associations under a common cause. “Our protest remained peaceful and successful without even going to Bengaluru for talks,” he said.
However, he also cautioned that the agitation could resume during the upcoming winter session of the Karnataka Legislature in Belagavi. “If 10 lakh farmers gather before Suvarna Soudha, we will again demand an additional ₹1,000 per tonne,” Guruji added.
