Belagavi: The Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) has identified two locations within the city to establish permanent dog sterilisation centres as part of efforts to control the growing stray dog population.

One centre is proposed in the northern part of the city and the other in the southern zone. Officials have not disclosed the exact locations, citing concerns over possible opposition from residents.
Construction is expected to begin soon, with funding likely to come from corporators’ reserve funds. The move follows the failure of an earlier plan to establish a sterilisation centre at Hirebagewadi due to opposition from local representatives.
Currently, only around 8–10 stray dogs are sterilised each day. With permanent facilities and the appointment of a new contractor, the BCC aims to increase the number to more than 20 surgeries daily.
According to BCC estimates, Belagavi has nearly 20,000 stray dogs. Although the animal birth control programme has been in place since 2007, inconsistent implementation has allowed the population to increase.
The proposed centres are expected to strengthen the city’s sterilisation programme and help the BCC meet Supreme Court guidelines on animal birth control.
