Belagavi rises to 72nd rank in Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 with big improvements in cleanliness

City leaps 126 spots nationally in Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 with major improvements in waste segregation and sanitation efforts.

Belagavi has shown remarkable progress in the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 rankings for cities with populations between 3 and 10 lakhs. The city jumped from 198th place in 2023 to 72nd place this year. This rise is attributed to the focused and sustained efforts by the Belagavi City Corporation (BCC). As a result, the city’s sanitation image has greatly improved.

Significant Improvement in Waste Segregation

Over the past six months, the city made great strides in improving waste segregation at the source. Waste segregation now stands at 80%, up from just 33% in the previous survey year. Moreover, this progress reflects growing public awareness and better municipal systems.

Strong Performance in Waste Collection and Cleanliness

Belagavi also maintained strong performance in door-to-door waste collection, with a rate of 97%. In addition, cleanliness in residential and market areas remained high at 99%. These numbers show that the daily sanitation work has been effective and consistent.

Areas Needing Further Attention

However, some areas still need improvement. Waste processing is currently at 14%, which is low and requires urgent attention. Furthermore, dumpsite remediation shows no progress and remains at 0%. Therefore, these issues negatively affect the overall cleanliness score.

State Ranking Slip Amid Rising Competition

Despite the national improvement, Belagavi slipped in the Karnataka state rankings. It moved down from 7th place last year to 11th place in 2024-25. Officials say this happened due to increased competition among cities in the state. Consequently, many other cities have also intensified their sanitation efforts.

Plans for Future Improvement

The Belagavi City Corporation has acknowledged these challenges. It plans to strengthen waste processing and start active dumpsite remediation soon. Furthermore, the goal is to improve infrastructure and sanitation further.

Role of Citizens and Community Involvement

Citizens have welcomed the city’s progress. Public participation has grown, helping the municipal body in its efforts. Moreover, the BCC believes that continued cooperation between the government and citizens will bring even better results.

Outlook: Targeting Top 50 Cities

Moving forward, the city aims to break into the top 50 in national rankings. With better planning, infrastructure investment, and public awareness, Belagavi is hopeful about maintaining its upward trend.
