Belagavi Prepares for Grand Ganeshotsav Celebrations
As the countdown for Ganeshotsav begins, Belagavi city is abuzz with activity, gearing up for the much-anticipated Ganeshotsav festival. With just 10 days remaining, over 400 public Ganeshotsav mandals in the city and around 3,500 across the district are busy installing grand idols of Lord Ganesha. This year, Ganesh Chaturthi falls on September 7, and preparations for Ganeshotsav are in full swing. The number of public Ganeshotsav mandals has seen steady growth, rising from 390 in 2023 to over 400 this year, reflecting the city’s rapid expansion. While there is a push for eco-friendly clay idols, plaster of Paris (PoP) idols remain popular, especially among public Ganeshotsav mandals. However, the state government and district administration have reiterated their directive to avoid PoP idols, citing environmental concerns. Despite this, many Ganeshotsav mandals have appealed for permission to use PoP idols, citing the challenge of sourcing clay idols in sufficient numbers. Vijay Patil, a representative of Lokmanya Tilak Ganeshotsav, emphasized the need for additional immersion ponds in the city, noting that the increase in Ganeshotsav mandals could lead to challenges during idol immersion. As the Ganeshotsav festival approaches, authorities and organizers are working together to ensure smooth, eco-friendly celebrations for the city’s growing number of devotees
