Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Khanapur Taluk along the Karnataka-Goa border, is one of the most unique and diverse protected areas in Belagavi district. Spread across 190 sq km (or 19,000 hectares), Bhimgad is rich in both natural biodiversity and historical significance.

The sanctuary is most famous for the Barapede Caves, the only known breeding ground of the critically endangered Wroughton’s Free-tailed Bat, a species on the brink of extinction. Bird watchers will also enjoy spotting rare species like the Malabar Grey Hornbill, Velvet-fronted Nuthatch, Imperial Pigeon, Emerald Dove, and the elusive Malabar Trogon.

But Bhimgad isn’t just about wildlife — it’s a historical treasure. Nestled deep inside the forest are the ruins of Bhimgad Fort, constructed by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the 17th century as a strategic outpost to guard against Portuguese expansion from Goa. The fort still retains its freshwater ponds, large walls, and cannons, offering a unique blend of nature and history.

Visitors en route to Bhimgad can also stop at the Belgaum Golf Course, located just opposite the Bhimgad Adventure Camp (managed by Jungle Lodges and Resorts), which offers eco-stays and guided experiences.

Best time to visit: October to March for pleasant weather and better wildlife sightings.
Travel tips: Carry binoculars, wear forest-friendly clothing, and always take a guide while exploring interiors or trekking to the fort.
