Godachinmalki Falls, also known as Markandeya Falls, is a majestic twin waterfall located about 40 km from Belgaum and 15 km from Gokak. Fed by the Markandeya River, the first fall plunges from a height of around 25 meters into a rocky valley. After flowing briefly through the gorge, the river cascades again from another 20-meter drop, creating a dramatic and photogenic scene. The waterfalls are nestled amidst lush greenery and can be reached via two scenic routes – one through Malebail Road and another via the Gurusiddeshwar Temple (Hatti Siddeshwar). For trekking enthusiasts, there’s also a trail from Nirvaneshwar Matha near Yogikolla, accessible only on foot.
A short drive from the falls brings you to Dupadal Dam, a historic reservoir built by the British in 1888 to regulate the Ghataprabha River. Over time, the dam has transformed into a serene picnic spot with a well-maintained garden and panoramic water views. But what truly sets Dupadal apart is the nearby Ghataprabha Bird Sanctuary – an island habitat formed in the dam’s backwaters. Between November and March, the area comes alive with migratory birds, making it a favorite among birdwatchers and photographers.
The best time to visit both spots is during the monsoon and post-monsoon season, when the falls are full and the dam overflows in scenic glory. Whether you’re trekking through forest paths to the roar of waterfalls or watching birds glide above calm waters, Godachinmalki Falls and Dupadal Dam promise a day of pure natural bliss.
