State Govt Moves Ahead with ₹50 Crore Tourism Boost Under PPP Model

Belagavi, June 16, 2025:
Karnataka has decided to move ahead with a ropeway project at Gokak Falls after receiving no support from the central government. The state will execute the project through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model to boost regional tourism.

A Delayed Proposal Gains Momentum

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Public Works Minister Satish Jarkiholi had earlier approached Union Minister Nitin Gadkari for assistance. However, since the Centre did not respond, the state took the lead instead. This proactive move has now revived the long-awaited plan.

Inspired by a similar cable car system in Dubai, Jarkiholi shared the idea with Tourism Minister H.K. Patil. The department welcomed the proposal and began initial preparations. According to Jarkiholi, the project will cost approximately ₹50 crore and aims to become South India’s first ropeway attraction.

State Engages RITES for Technical Study

To assess feasibility, the tourism department brought in Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES). A technical team from Delhi will soon visit Gokak Falls and conduct a site study. Once the report is ready, the government will begin the tender process.

Moreover, officials believe the ropeway will improve accessibility and offer panoramic views of the falls. The project is expected to elevate Gokak’s status as a major tourist destination in Karnataka.

Gokak Falls: A Monsoon Marvel

Located around 70 km from Belagavi, Gokak Falls stretches 581 feet across and plunges 171 feet into a deep gorge. The Ghataprabha River feeds the waterfall, which reaches its full glory several times a year when water is released from Hidkal Dam.

Often called the “Niagara of Karnataka,” the falls attract thousands of tourists during the monsoon season. However, due to limited infrastructure, the site has not reached its full tourism potential—until now.

Locals Welcome the Initiative

Local residents and businesses have expressed strong support for the ropeway project. “The number of visitors will grow once the ropeway starts,” said Rayappa, who runs a hotel near the falls. He and many others believe the initiative will create jobs and boost the local economy.

Broader Development Plans

In addition to the ropeway, the government is planning several upgrades to the area, including:

  • Repairing the iconic hanging bridge
  • Starting boating facilities
  • Introducing amusement and adventure zones

These features will enhance the overall visitor experience. Furthermore, they will help position Gokak Falls as a year-round destination, not just a seasonal attraction.

A Bold Step for Tourism

By choosing to move forward independently, Karnataka has shown its commitment to tourism development. While the Centre remained unresponsive, the state took initiative. As a result, Gokak Falls is set to become a landmark site in South India’s tourism circuit.
