- First Case: An 8-month-old male infant from Bengaluru tested positive for HMPV on January 2. BBMP health officials stated that the child and his family have no history of travel, and the infant exhibited no severe symptoms.
- Second Case: A 3-month-old female infant with a history of bronchopneumonia tested positive for HMPV at Bengaluru’s Baptist Hospital. The Union Health Ministry reported that the infant has recovered and returned home.
About HMPV
HMPV primarily affects children and accounts for approximately 0.7% of flu cases globally. Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao emphasized the need for further analysis to determine whether these cases involve a new strain linked to recent global outbreaks.
What You Need to Know
- ICMR included the virus in routine respiratory surveillance.
- Health officials confirmed that neither family has a travel history.
- Both infants are recovering and in stable condition.
Health experts recommend vigilance but advise against panic, as HMPV is a known virus with no evidence of a large-scale outbreak in India.
