On October 15, 2025, the pipeline stretch of Ramghat Road in Belagavi was the scene of a positive and inspiring civic initiative. Students from SBG Nursing College organized a thorough road cleanup drive, operating under their self-formed ‘Yuvatara Group.’ This voluntary action was a direct response to a persistent and worrying problem: the chronic accumulation of garbage. Consequently, the visible debris had become both a major eyesore and a critical public health risk for the local communities and commuters using the road daily.

The root cause of the illegal dumping stemmed from two factors. The first was a lack of basic civic awareness regarding waste disposal laws. Furthermore, many households sought to avoid the minor local service fees associated with proper collection. These residents consciously bypassed the municipal collection vehicle, locally known as the Kachara Gaadi. Instead, they irresponsibly discarded their waste on the roadside after dark. This negligence transformed the area into a sprawling, unauthorized dumping ground, creating a breeding ground for pests.
The SBG Nursing students quickly recognized the urgent need for change. Specifically, they spent the entire late afternoon meticulously collecting and bagging piles of refuse. The collected trash included plastic bottles, discarded food wrappers, medical waste, and general household debris. Ultimately, their sustained effort filled dozens of large garbage bags. Approximately two dozen dedicated students from various years of the nursing program actively participated. Moreover, they wore protective gear and utilized their own cleaning supplies, demonstrating a high degree of commitment to community health principles.
Group organizer Imam Hussain Khudunnavar addressed local reporters during the drive. He made a passionate plea to all citizens, urging them to responsibly utilize the Kachara Gaadi service. Khudunnavar emphasized that cleanliness is a shared civic and moral responsibility, not solely the task of the municipality. He added that the group plans to conduct similar drives monthly. The neatly bagged waste was staged and successfully collected by the Benkanahalli Gram Panchayat the following morning. Therefore, this successful cleanup generated widespread praise, serving as an inspiring example of youth-led civic engagement and potentially spurring greater municipal enforcement.
