Kannada Language Act Reinforces Kannada Signboard Compliance in Belagavi

The Kannada Language Comprehensive Development (Amendment) Act-2024 mandates that commercial establishments display at least 60% of their signboard content in Kannada, placed in the upper half of the signage. This law aims to strengthen Kannada’s presence and promote it as a primary communication medium across Karnataka. Despite prior notifications, many businesses had not yet complied with the rule. Health officer Dr. Sanjiv Nandre noted that officials removed about 90% of non-compliant boards in earlier efforts. The current drive targets remaining violations along the main Kannada Rajyotsava celebration routes, where Kannada pride and visibility take precedence.

Pro-Kannada Groups Push for Stronger Kannada Signboard Compliance

The campaign also addresses pressure from pro-Kannada organizations. These groups criticized BCC’s inaction on Kannada signboard compliance. Through citywide protests, they highlighted the need to protect Kannada’s identity and set a two-week deadline for the removal of all non-Kannada signage. In response, BCC reminded branded companies and franchises in Belagavi to comply with local language display requirements, underscoring its commitment to the guidelines.

Public Support Grows for BCC’s Kannada Compliance Campaign

Under Commissioner Shubha B’s leadership, BCC has taken steps to communicate the importance of Kannada signboard compliance to business owners. This compliance strengthens connections with the local community, especially during Kannada Rajyotsava, which honors Karnataka’s statehood. By promoting Kannada language in public signage, BCC reinforces its dedication to preserving Kannada identity. The public has largely welcomed these actions as a way to maintain Kannada’s cultural value in daily life. Through this campaign, BCC aims to boost community awareness and foster regional pride.
