Detecting Ineligible BPL Cardholders
Government rules specify that income taxpayers, families earning more than ₹1.2 lakh annually, and government employees cannot hold BPL ration cards. However, officials discovered that 6,688 income taxpayers, 54,222 individuals exceeding the income limit, and 306 government employees had obtained BPL cards in Belagavi. The department has begun reclaiming these ration cards and plans to take legal action. In total, Belagavi has 14.5 lakh ration cardholders, including both Above Poverty Line (APL) and BPL cardholders.
Targeting Government Employees with BPL Cards
Authorities are especially focusing on government employees who possess BPL cards, with 60 such cases found in Belagavi city alone. The deputy commissioner’s office is collecting Aadhaar details to track down other government employees misusing BPL benefits. Since 2020, the department has already cancelled 45,804 ineligible cards in the district. Residents raised concerns that influential and wealthy individuals have misused BPL schemes with the help of some authorities.
