High-Ranking Officials Face Lokayukta Scrutiny

Belagavi: In a major crackdown on alleged corruption, the Karnataka Lokayukta, led by Belagavi Lokayukta SP Hanamantharay, carried out coordinated raids on Tuesday at the residences of three government officials across Belagavi district. Authorities suspect these officials possess disproportionate assets. The Lokayukta raided locations in Belagavi, Nipani, and Dharwad, seizing several assets and documents for further investigation.

One key target was the Belagavi home of Venkatesh Majumdar, the Deputy Commissioner of Commercial Taxes currently posted in Bengaluru. Majumdar, who formerly worked in Belagavi, reportedly acquired property in the city. Meanwhile, Nipani’s Village Accountant Vithal Shivappa, previously apprehended with unaccounted cash of ₹1.10 crore while traveling from Belagavi to Bagalkot, also faced a raid. Authorities allegedly found more unaccounted money at his rented home in Nipani during the operation.

Seized Assets and Ongoing Investigation

The Lokayukta’s investigation extended to the Dharwad residence and Ugargol farmhouse of Govindappa Bhajantri, an Assistant Executive Engineer with the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB). Authorities inspected Bhajantri’s farmhouse and urban residence, and they confiscated multiple documents. The Lokayukta has intensified its anti-corruption efforts in Belagavi district, aiming to curb illicit financial activities among government officials.
