Commuters can soon breathe a sigh of relief as the new Kusmali Bridge on the Belagavi–Chorla route is all set to open for traffic. Authorities plan to open the bridge for all vehicles starting July 1, 2025. Although the main slab work is already complete, the concrete still needs about 15 days to fully cure.

✅ Light Vehicles to Get Early Access

To minimize daily inconvenience, officials have decided to allow two- and four-wheelers within the next four days. Workers are currently completing the final touches, such as gravel laying and wall construction, to ensure a safe passage.

🔄 Why the New Bridge Was Needed

The old British-era bridge over the Malaprabha River had become dangerously weak due to heavy vehicle movement. Recognizing the risk, the National Highways Authority demolished the old structure and started constructing a new one in February 2025. The new bridge now spans 90 meters in length and 5.5 meters in width, providing a more reliable route for travelers.

🌧️ Rain Disruptions & Alternate Route Challenges

Meanwhile, authorities had created a temporary mud-fill and pipe bridge to maintain connectivity. However, recent rains washed it away three times in 20 days, forcing commuters to use the Khanapur–Jamboti route, which remains in a severely damaged condition.

🚗 Travel Back to Normal Soon

Once the bridge opens, commuters will regain a smooth connection between Belagavi and Goa via Chorla. This is expected to significantly reduce travel time and vehicle wear.

In conclusion, the Kusmali Bridge reopening marks a major improvement for regional connectivity. Local officials have urged residents to stay updated through verified sources as light vehicle access may resume within just a few days.
