The issue arose after reports claimed that doctors had mistakenly removed a patient’s intestine instead of a stomach tumor during surgery. Raising the matter during Question Hour, Congress MLC M. Nagaraju demanded strict action against those responsible, alleging serious medical negligence.
Responding to the debate, Medical Education Minister Dr. Sharan Prakash Patil firmly denied the accusation. He said the government had examined the reports and found no evidence of negligence by the surgical team.

According to the minister, the patient—described as a chronic alcoholic and tobacco user—had been referred from a taluk hospital with a diagnosis of intestinal perforation. Subsequent USG and sonography conducted at BIMS revealed an appendicular perforation.
Dr. Patil informed the House that a laparotomy was performed on June 20, 2025, followed by an appendectomy after swelling was observed at the appendix tip. The intestine was inspected during surgery and found to be normal, he noted, adding that it had not been removed, contrary to media reports.
The minister also stated that the patient’s family took him home against medical advice on June 22, interrupting further treatment.
Reassuring the Council, Dr. Patil concluded that the surgical team had adhered to proper medical procedures and that no lapse occurred at BIMS Hospital.
