Hirebagewadi:
Strong opposition has emerged from villagers against the construction of a stray dog shelter near Mallappan Guddah, close to Hirebagewadi, where stray dogs from Belagavi city are proposed to be housed. Residents have objected to the site selection, stating that the shelter is being built close to the village instead of a deserted area.

Villagers alleged that the Belagavi City Corporation should have managed the growing stray dog population within the city through sterilisation and proper care, rather than shifting the issue to rural areas. They also raised concerns over the proximity of the proposed shelter to the newly constructed Rani Channamma University campus, fearing it could affect students and academic activities.

Additionally, the area surrounding the site includes agricultural land, with farmers frequently passing through the region. Locals fear the presence of a large number of stray dogs could pose safety risks. Villagers criticised authorities for taking the decision without consulting the gram panchayat or residents and demanded that the project be relocated. They warned of intensified protests if the plan is not withdrawn.
