In a letter dated March 12, 2026, addressed to Belagavi MP Jagadish Shettar, the minister outlined critical requirements for the upgrade. These include adequate runway length, installation of an Instrument Landing System (ILS), proper airfield lighting, and the provision of essential services such as immigration, health, and animal and plant quarantine facilities.

The minister also emphasized that sufficient passenger demand for international travel will be a key factor in the decision. Additionally, airlines must show willingness to operate international flights from Belagavi.

MP Jagadish Shettar had met the Union Minister on February 3, 2026, to submit a formal request for the airport’s upgrade, supported by a letter from Karnataka’s Minister for Large and Medium Industries and Infrastructure Development, M.B. Patil, dated August 12, 2025.

The Civil Aviation Ministry indicated that once all requirements are met and airlines come forward, the proposal to convert Belagavi Airport into an international airport can be considered favorably in the future.
