BCC Collects Rs 70.8 Cr Tax, Misses Target

Belagavi:
The Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) collected Rs 70.8 crore in property tax for the financial year 2025–26, marking a slight increase from Rs 69.5 crore collected in the previous year. Despite the improvement, the civic body failed to meet its overall recovery target.

The revenue department had set a base target of Rs 78 crore, along with Rs 11.4 crore in pending dues from the previous year, taking the total target to Rs 89.4 crore. However, collections fell short of this figure.

Officials, including Commissioner Kartik M and Revenue Deputy Commissioner Sidhu Hulloli, undertook several measures to boost collections, such as conducting review meetings, assigning individual targets to staff, and issuing show-cause notices to underperforming employees. Despite these efforts, multiple administrative responsibilities impacted performance.

Revenue staff were largely occupied with election-related duties, voter list verification, surveys, and census work, limiting their ability to focus on tax recovery.

Looking ahead, the challenge is expected to grow. For 2026–27, BCC has set a base target of Rs 85 crore, and with over Rs 7 crore in pending dues added, the total recovery target is projected to exceed Rs 92 crore.

With the national census already underway, officials anticipate continued pressure on staff as they balance administrative duties with revenue collection targets.
