10-Acre Land Issue Delays CBG Project in Belagavi

Belagavi, April 27: The proposed compressed biogas (CBG) project by Gas Authority of India Ltd (GAIL) in Belagavi continues to face delays due to the non-availability of a suitable 10-acre contiguous land parcel.

The project, approved in November 2025 under the Centre’s GOBARdhan scheme, is designed as a waste-to-energy initiative to process around 150 tonnes of wet waste daily and convert it into compressed biogas and organic fertiliser. GAIL has committed full funding for the project, with a capital investment of Rs 54.2 crore and an annual operational cost of Rs 7.6 crore, ensuring no financial burden on the Belagavi City Corporation (BCC).

Initially planned at the Turmuri waste management facility, the project was shelved following strong local opposition. Efforts to identify alternative sites in different parts of the city have also met resistance, leaving the land issue unresolved.

Officials say the requirement of a single, unbroken 10-acre plot within city limits has emerged as a key challenge, limiting available options. The delay is also raising concerns about its impact on the city’s broader waste management strategy, including the proposed relocation of the Turmuri waste depot.

With the project’s future uncertain, pressure is mounting on the BCC to take a decisive call, as prolonged delays could hinder a key environmental initiative aimed at sustainable waste management.
