Belagavi: The Belagavi City Crime Branch (CCB) police arrested a 62-year-old man for allegedly possessing opium for illegal sale near the KSRTC depot and Indira Canteen on Fort Road.

The accused has been identified as Rafiq Ahmed Husseinsab Sikkalgar (62). Acting on information, a CCB team led by Police Inspector Manjunath Naik, along with PSI Manjunath Bhajantari and other personnel, conducted a raid in the area.
During the operation, police seized approximately 2.988 kg of suspected opium, including opium plant material, poppy husk pieces and powder. The seized substance is estimated to be worth around ₹44,000.
During interrogation, the accused reportedly told police that he had obtained the substance from a person named Dhirubhai, who is from Rajasthan.

A case has been registered at the Market Police Station under Sections 15(b) and 8(c) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Police have launched a further investigation to trace the source and establish the involvement of others.
The Police Commissioner of Belagavi City and the Deputy Commissioner of Police appreciated the CCB officers and personnel involved in the operation.
