The resolution, sought by several Kannada organisations, has been under discussion for several months. The Urban Development Department has reportedly informed the BCC that there is no legal impediment to adopting the single-line resolution.

BCC Commissioner Kartik M is expected to place the government’s clarification before the House and initiate a discussion on the matter.

The proposal has drawn opposition from Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) corporators. MES corporator Ravi Salunke has questioned the need for a fresh discussion, citing the corporation’s law officer’s view that the issue cannot be discussed while the border dispute is pending before the Supreme Court.

The issue has historical significance for the civic body. In 2005, when the MES controlled the BCC, the corporation had passed a resolution favouring Maharashtra. Kannada organisations are now seeking a resolution reaffirming Belagavi’s status as part of Karnataka.

Given the sensitivity of the issue, the Directorate of Municipal Administration has directed the BCC to have the proceedings monitored by a senior officer. Superintendent Engineer Laxmi Nipanikar has been appointed as the observer to monitor the meeting and ensure that rules and procedures are followed.

Meanwhile, a delegation of Kannada organisations led by activist Ashok Chandaragi met Commissioner Kartik M and urged the corporation to take steps to adopt the proposed resolution.
