Belagavi: As many as 63 villages in Belagavi district have been included in the proposed Western Ghats eco-sensitive zone under the Kasturirangan recommendations.

The proposed eco-sensitive area covers nearly 867 sq km, with 62 villages in Khanapur taluk and one village in Belagavi taluk. The district administration has invited objections and suggestions from residents, elected representatives, industrialists, businesses and other stakeholders until September 25.
The draft notification proposes regulations on industrial, mining, commercial and infrastructure activities within the proposed zone. Activities have been classified into Green, Yellow, Orange and Red categories, based on the level of restrictions.
The administration has asked affected residents and organisations to submit their representations to the Deputy Conservator of Forests, respective tahsildars, the Deputy Commissioner’s office or forest department officials.
All suggestions and objections will be forwarded to the state government for consideration before the proposal is placed before the Cabinet for a final decision.
Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Roshan said the proposed restrictions under the Kasturirangan framework are less stringent than those recommended by the earlier Madhav Gadgil Committee.
