Belagavi, September 2026: The district Animal Husbandry Department has launched a month-long rabies awareness and vaccination campaign across Belagavi ahead of World Rabies Day on September 28.

The campaign is being conducted through 203 veterinary clinics across the district. As part of the initiative, officials have distributed 66,395 leaflets and 1,084 posters highlighting rabies prevention, animal vaccination and precautions following dog bites.
Awareness programmes are being held in schools, colleges, gram panchayats, local self-government bodies and among the general public.
What to do after a dog bite
Officials have urged people who are bitten or scratched by a dog or any suspected rabid animal to immediately wash the wound with soap and clean running water for 15 minutes and seek medical attention at the nearest health centre.
People have also been cautioned against applying black pepper, oil, ointments or other home remedies to the wound.
Focus on animal vaccination
The department has stressed the importance of regular vaccination and proper healthcare for pet dogs and cats. Local self-government bodies have also been urged to support stray dog vaccination programmes and public awareness initiatives.
The campaign carries the message “Vaccinate, Create Awareness, Save Lives”, with officials calling for collective community action to make Belagavi rabies-free.
