Rajya Sabha MP Prof. M. Nagaraj has urged the Central Government to construct a nearly 9-km elevated railway track through the heart of Belagavi to address the city’s growing traffic congestion and problems caused by railway level crossings.

Raising the issue during the Rajya Sabha session in New Delhi, Nagaraj said the railway line passing through the city has led to frequent congestion at level crossings, causing inconvenience to commuters and affecting the movement of emergency vehicles.
He proposed developing the existing railway corridor as an elevated track on viaducts for about 9 km. According to him, the project would help eliminate waiting at railway gates and reduce traffic congestion around existing railway overbridges.
Nagaraj also highlighted that the elevated corridor could improve connectivity between different parts of the city, enhance public safety and facilitate smoother movement of heavy vehicles and emergency services.
He urged Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna to consider the proposal on priority and take steps towards its approval.
The proposed elevated railway track is being pitched as a long-term solution to Belagavi’s traffic and railway-crossing problems.
