BCC Intensifies Plastic Crackdown in Belagavi

Belagavi, July 7: The Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) has stepped up its drive against the use of banned plastic materials as part of its efforts to make the city plastic-free and improve waste management. The civic body has begun issuing notices to hotels, grocery stores and other commercial establishments, urging them to replace single-use plastic with biodegradable and eco-friendly alternatives.

Belagavi generates around 160 to 180 tonnes of solid waste every day, with nearly 25% consisting of plastic waste, making its disposal a significant challenge. To address the issue, BCC sends approximately 8,000 tonnes of plastic waste annually to cement factories for recycling and is exploring partnerships with private firms to strengthen plastic waste management.

Officials said awareness campaigns, regular inspections and penalties for violations will continue to discourage the use of banned plastic products. The district administration is also preparing a comprehensive plan to reduce plastic consumption across Belagavi.

Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Roshan appealed to citizens to actively support the plastic-free campaign, while Zilla Panchayat CEO Rahul Shinde said solid waste processing units have been established in 500 gram panchayats to ensure scientific disposal of waste, including plastic, across the district.
