Belagavi District Split Demand Rises Before Winter Session

Belagavi is witnessing renewed momentum in the decades-old demand to divide the state’s largest district as the Karnataka legislature’s winter session begins on December 8. With the Election Commission directing states to finalise taluk and district boundaries before the end of December—prior to next year’s delimitation exercise—activists warn that any delay now will push the creation of new districts to at least 2028.

The movements in Gokak and Chikodi have turned especially assertive, with seers Panchamalingeshwar Swamiji and Murugharajendra Swamiji leading the campaigns. Both have announced plans to meet Chief Minister Siddaramaiah during the session and organise protests outside the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha. A bandh in Gokak earlier this week received overwhelming public support, signalling rising pressure on the government.

Arabhavi MLA Balachandra Jarkiholi has also urged the government to resolve the issue during the session, while local leaders remain hopeful that a concrete step toward forming new districts may finally emerge.
