Belagavi Mandates Biodegradable Packaging for Hotels

Ahead of the implementation, BCC health inspectors conducted awareness drives among hotel operators, encouraging them to switch to eco-friendly takeaway containers and biodegradable carry bags. The civic body also met wholesale plastic bag dealers, urging them to gradually phase out plastic carry bags and increase the supply of biodegradable alternatives.

Technical Engineer (Environment) Hanmant Kaladagi said hotel operators had been informed about the directive well in advance. He noted that replacing plastic packaging with biodegradable alternatives would significantly contribute to environmental conservation.

The Corporation has appealed to residents to support the initiative by carrying reusable or cloth bags while shopping and avoiding single-use plastics. Officials believe the combined efforts of businesses and citizens will help reduce plastic waste and create a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Belagavi.

The latest initiative builds on BCC’s earlier efforts to curb plastic use, including the distribution of cloth bags to citizens and the installation of cloth bag vending machines at select locations.
