According to police data, the district witnessed 2,052 road accidents in 2025, resulting in 805 deaths and 3,058 injuries. Officials fear that if the current trend continues, this year’s figures could surpass last year’s totals.

Police attribute the increase in accidents to reckless driving, speeding, drunk driving, riding without helmets, traffic rule violations, and poorly maintained vehicles. Rural roads account for a significant share of the accidents reported in the district.

To improve road safety, the district police have launched a major traffic monitoring initiative using AI-powered CCTV cameras. A total of 290 cameras will be installed at 145 locations outside Belagavi city in three phases. In the first phase, 30 cameras have already been installed at 15 locations, detecting more than 1,000 traffic violations daily, with peak counts exceeding 4,000 cases.

District Superintendent of Police K. Ramarajan said that collecting fines alone is not enough to prevent accidents and urged motorists to strictly follow traffic rules. He noted that nearly 900 people die in road accidents annually in the district and stressed the need for greater public awareness and responsible driving.

The police department also plans to make helmet use mandatory on rural roads, strengthen enforcement of one-way traffic regulations, and expand surveillance at accident-prone locations to reduce fatalities.
