Belagavi, May 14: In a major breach of trust, six caretakers have been booked for allegedly stealing nearly 910 grams of gold jewellery worth over ₹1.3 crore from the residence of an elderly doctor couple in Belagavi.

According to police, the theft took place at the house of Dr Vishwanath Ghate, 83, and his wife Annapurna Ghate, 81, on Club Road. Dr Ghate is visually impaired and physically weak, and multiple caretakers had been employed over the years to assist him.
Based on a complaint filed by Annapurna Ghate at Camp Police Station, police suspect the accused gradually stole the jewellery from a bedroom cupboard over a period of six months between October 2025 and May 2026.
The accused have been identified as Siddu Ramchandra Devareddy from Gadag district, Rahul Satish Kamble from Kagwad taluk, Manikant Manjunath Vernekar from Shahapur, Anil Mudalagi from Belagavi, Nagesh Vaddar from Khanapur taluk, and T Gopal from Hospet.

The theft came to light after the family checked the cupboard and found nearly one kilogram of gold ornaments missing. Police have launched an investigation and are probing whether the valuables were systematically removed over time.
The incident has raised concern among residents, especially families relying on caretakers and domestic help for elderly care.
