Karnataka winter session in Belagavi

The Karnataka government plans to decide the location of this year’s winter legislative session at the upcoming cabinet meeting on Thursday, November 14. Typically held in Belagavi every December, the session’s location remains uncertain this year due to overlapping preparations for a major event—the centenary celebration of the 1924 AICC session chaired by Mahatma Gandhi.

Belagavi Prepares for Winter Session Alongside AICC Centenary Celebration

Preliminary plans indicate that the winter session may run from December 9 to 20 in Belagavi. The state government has instructed the district administration to start preparations, while authorities have begun reserving accommodations for legislators and officials. Both the Assembly Speaker and Council Chairperson visited Belagavi recently to review the arrangements.

However, in a recent cabinet meeting, officials granted Chief Minister Siddaramaiah the authority to determine the session’s location and dates, according to Law Minister H.K. Patil. This mention of “location” has raised questions about whether Belagavi will host the session or if the government may shift it to Bengaluru.

AICC Event Demands Extensive Preparation in Belagavi

Belagavi is also getting ready for a high-profile centenary celebration of the historic 1924 AICC session led by Mahatma Gandhi, scheduled for December 26-27. Congress plans to organize this on a grand scale, with special guests like former U.S. President Barack Obama. The government has formed a 60-member committee of dignitaries, led by Law Minister H.K. Patil and former Chief Minister Veerappa Moily, to coordinate the preparations.

Because of the dual demands on Belagavi’s resources, speculation has arisen that the government may hold the winter session in Bengaluru instead. Thursday’s cabinet meeting should provide a final decision on the session’s location, offering clarity on the upcoming events in Karnataka.
