Tension broke out in Belagavi on Monday as police detained more than 20 members of the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) for attempting to hold a “Mahamela” without permission, parallel to the ongoing Winter Session at Suvarna Vidhana Soudha.

MES leaders, including Manoahak Kinekar, Malojirav Ashtekar and Shubham Shelke, were detained near the Second Railway Gate while heading to the Vaccine Depot Grounds, where the event was planned. During the incident, MES workers raised pro-Maharashtra slogans.
Kannada activists from the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (T.A. Narayanagouda faction), who had gathered to oppose the MES stand, were also taken into custody.
Despite police restrictions, MES workers continued toward the venue before being stopped and transported by police vehicles. The area briefly witnessed heightened tension following the detentions.
