BCC Decision on Sambhaji Maharaj Statue Inauguration

The Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) approved the Sambhaji Maharaj statue inauguration in a council meeting, stating that all necessary preparations were complete. However, objections from a minority group have stirred controversy. Patil accused the Congress-led government of halting cleaning work at the statue site to create an impression of incompleteness.

Controversy Over Statue and Posters

Patil criticized the removal of posters featuring Chatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, and other national heroes. He called this action an anti-Hindu move. He contrasted this with the government’s recent installation of banners for Mahatma Gandhi’s 1924 Congress session centenary, which faced no opposition.

Guests and Plans for the Inauguration

Notable guests, including a descendant of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Guruvarya Sambhaji Bhide, are expected to attend the event. Activists have warned of a statewide “Belagavi Chalo” movement if authorities deny permission for the Sambhaji Maharaj statue inauguration.

Regional Significance of the Statue

The statue represents cultural pride and historical significance for the region. Activists argue that its inauguration is essential for preserving regional heritage. Elders and youth groups remain committed to ensuring the event proceeds as planned.

The next steps will be decided after Saturday’s discussions with officials. Stay tuned for further updates.
